Department of Adulting's
Origin Story
Department of Adulting is about giving 20- and 30-somethings fun, well-researched, informed articles on things that are actually important to your life.
Hi! I’m so excited you’re here! I started Department of Adulting because I love learning new things and am always desperate to tell anyone who will listen the new fun/important/helpful facts I learn from my research, reading, and real-life experience (yes, I did go for some alliteration there). In fact, my partner Andrew was always telling me I needed to start a “Fun Facts with Christine” blog, though I wanted to create something that wasn’t just fun, it was also useful and offered guidance that I wish I had earlier in my life. And so Department of Adulting was born.
In particular, Department of Adulting is aimed at bringing greater wellness to your physical and mental health and finances. I believe we have to have all 3 to have a truly healthy life. As a runner and rock climber, I can attest to the importance of finding a fitness routine you love to support your health. At the same time, I’ve also struggled with obsessive behaviors around eating healthy and exercising (like anorexia and over-exercising) and so know that cultivating our mental health is just as important for our overall wellbeing. Plus, it’s almost impossible to prioritize healthy behaviors if our finances are out of whack. Hence DoA’s primary focus on these 3 interrelated topics.

If you’re interested in who I am as a person, I have a Master’s and PhD in Sociology, with specialties in Demography and Statistics (*I know, that sounds very snooze-worthy*) and I currently work as a Policy Development Analyst for University of Washington. In my education and work experience I did a lot of research on gun violence, segregation, and migration (if you’re super interested and want the full lowdown on my research see my CV.)
